Discovered in the 1980s deep in a Manganese mine in South Africa, (still the only source for Sugilite), this unique and rare gem material was once marketed under the name “Royal Lavulite”. Now commonly known as Sugilite this material is known for it’s intense purple color*, and in rare pieces it’s translucent glowing quality. The finest Sugilite is intense purple and bright translucent when held up to the light. Sugilite, especially top quality material, is very rare and there is only just a very limited amount of fine material ever available in the world market, if indeed any at all can be found. The intense purple color of Sugilite has made it a popular gem with metaphysicians who attribute high vibration and spiritual qualities to it.
*(Sugilite is actually what is known as a photo dichroic gem, meaning that it changes color depending on the light source, from blue to purple.)
