Mined by local nomadic tribesmen in north eastern Kenya, Garbatula has been known to produce some very fine sapphires. Although the mines primarily are known for producing inky dark blue material, occasionally pockets are discovered of bright intense natural yellow sapphires. Often these yellow stones also have blue color zoning and can produce some really amazing, very unique bi-color gems. Rough sapphire production from this area is very sporadic and especially the yellow and bi-color material is almost impossible find. These are very rare sapphires, some of the finest natural canary yellow and yellow/blue bi-color found anywhere in the world.
